The basics of what we do hasn't changed much, and has developed into a really pleasant couple of hours each week. We usually start with some self-reiki, both to bring that into our daily practice, and to give people a few more minutes to filter in. From there we do our opening circle where we introduce ourselves and share another thing or two about ourselves, and ask any questions that have come up. Then we split into two groups and give and receive for about 70 - 90 minutes, and then we close. I was telling my mom on the phone yesterday about it - who I have been able to give some reiki to, and I was telling her about receiving Reiki from 4 or 5 people at once. "Instant Bliss" is how I described it.

Anyway, what motivated me to blog about this last Reiki Circle was - well, let me back up. I host a number of events at my house, and some of those events bring a lot of very beautiful, sexy energy with them. It may have been some of that residual energy I was feeling as I was looking across the table at Adele, my love, as we were giving Reiki. I found myself, as I often do when I look at her, loving her in the absolute, unconditional way that is so easy to love her. Additionally, I was completely sexualizing her - seeing her physical beauty and feeling my desire - to take her into my arms and make love.

We finished up that particular round of Reiki and I turned around and said, "I was thinking that I wouldn't mention this, but I think I'm going to...", and I told the rest of the circle what I had been feeling in the last round. Because it is ok to be feeling love while giving Reiki. It's also ok to be feeling lusty and sexy while giving Reiki. Note here that the feeling of it is what I am talking about. It would, of course, not be ok to bring those feelings into any un-safe, un-sane, or non-consensual action. But to feel them, to acknowledge them - I think may simply be human. And the rest of the evening was a little bit like someone had un-stopped a cork. There was laughter, giggles, and other mentions of the gray line between the sensual and sexual.
12/13/06
We got started a little bit later this evening, probably due to the explosion of people that showed up - wow! Preparations included putting on a big pot of tea, as well as having some bagged tea and hot water available. Considering that it all disappeared, I'm guessing that everyone else thought it was as tasty as I did, and even though this is supposed to be about Reiki, I thought I would share this simple recipe:

David's Super Easy Ginger-Lemon Tea
(serves: a lot; costs: not much)

Take a medium-to-large pot, and fill it about 3/4 full with water

Take a few big hand-sized chunks of ginger root; slice into thin; throw them in

Take 2 good-sized lemons; slice off the ends; slice the remaining; throw them in

Turn up the heat; bring to a boil; and simmer until you're done drinking it

We did our opening circle, introducing ourselves and saying a few words about what drew us here. Experience ranged, again, from having received, to Master level.

I wanted to bring some self-reiki into our experience - perhaps to make it a common element of the circle as well as a reminder that we can easily have a daily experience of Reiki - so we ran through the common hand positions for self-treatment on the head, and then took about 12 minutes to give to ourselves.

I currently have two tables in my space and, while one can practice Reiki on the floor, it seemed like a good opportunity to have two well-sized groups to share between. So we divided into two groups, each group took a table, and we gave to each person in each group for about 15 minutes. If you have never had an opportunity to receive Reiki from 3, or 4, or 5 practitioners, I highly recommend it as something to try.

After sharing, we gave some distance Reiki to loved ones and had our closing circle.
12/6/06
Our Reiki Circle met for the first time this evening. It was a small gathering - a very nice group of four. We got the living room space ready with two tables and put water on for tea, and right around 7:00 we started by having an opening circle. We went around and expressed what had brought us to the circle and what we hoped to experience by being there. We also talked about our Reiki experience, and included what our Reiki training was, if any. Together we represented Master and level 1, as well as one uninitiated. I talked a little about the history of Reiki - how it originated and came to the United States. As there were four of us there, it seemed to make sense to split up into pairs for the Reiki sharing, so we started by doing a simple demonstration of the basic traditional hand positions before splitting up and taking about 25 minutes each of giving and receiving. After wrapping up the sharing, we got together again for a closing circle and spoke a little about our trading experience, and then I asked everyone to think of one or more people they would like to send some distance Reiki to, and to put them in the middle of our circle. We then sent them Reiki for a few minutes, and came to a close.

A couple of topics that came up that we will likely go over again in future circles were: review of the traditional Usui hand positions and review of self-Reiki.

Biography: David

Q: When did you complete each level of training, and how many hours were involved?
A: I did my Reiki I training in 2002. Eight hours w ere spread out into two four-hour segments. My Reiki II training came about a year later, and took an entire weekend including a few hours on Friday, and then all day on Saturday and Sunday. My Reiki III, or Master, training came about two years later, and spanned a period of about 6 months. This time was spent playing a supporting role in the teaching of Reiki I and II classes, practicing with my teacher, practicing on my own, and finding my own place as a Reiki Master and Practitioner. For all of my trainings, I was physically present with my teachers.

Q: Do you have a daily self-treatment Reiki practice?
A: Most commonly, I give myself Reiki as I am going to sleep and when I wake up. Throughout the day I often find myself doing self-treatment, whenever I have a hand free. I find a daily practice of Reiki to be very valuable, both from the benefits that I recive from it, as well as the daily reminder to set time aside for myself and treat myself well.

Q: What is your experience as a practitioner?
A: Since my Reiki I training I have offered Reiki in a number of settings. These range from participating in Reiki Circles, to practicing Reiki at events, to offering Reiki to friends and family, and to offering treatments professionally in my private practice. I would estimate that I have given hundreds of Reiki treatments.

Q: How do you describe Reiki?
A: I don't always describe Reiki in the same way. Sometimes I say I'm not absolutely sure what is going on - but I've experience enough results from it, both in myself and in others, that I know it is doing good and I just surrender to that. Sometimes I describe Reiki as love. And sometimes I describe it as an energy work - where I as a practitioner am a conduit for the energy that is all around us and inside us. It moves through me, through you, and back out through me, clearing and balancing both you and me at the same time.

Q: What can I expect during your sessions?
A: If you come to me for a Reiki session, you can expect that I will give you a peaceful space in which to receive, that you will be clothed while you receive, and that a full session usually includes about an hour on the table, with some time before and after for checking in and reflecting on what the session was like for you.

Q: What is your unique perspective as a Reiki healer?
A: I have always been interested in healing, and have practiced some form of bodywork for a long time. I then add my Reiki training, which I already described. On top of that I have done years of counseling work with individuals. I am a firm believer in our individual power to manifest our reality. We can heal ourselves. We bring people into our life to help us experience what we want to experience, to learn what we want to learn, to grow in the ways we want to grow. I am a firm believer in you, and I know that you can experience, and learn, and grow in all of the ways that you want to - simply by deciding to.

1. I suggest a donation in exchange for the time that we will share together. If my requested donation is in a different place, higher or lower, than you wish to meet me at with your means and desire, I invite you to look inward and observe how you value your own time, your own energy, and that of others, and to open up a dialogue with me.

New Clients - 100% Donation
For your first session, I suggest this: come see me, experience what I offer, and then offer back to me an exchange that feels like it matches the value of what you just received. That amount might be more than my suggested donation, and it might be less.

I offer this to new clients because many people are stepping into the unknown with Reiki, and are interested in trying it out. I also offer this to new clients because I think there is a benefit in making a decision about what value something has for you - in being an active participant in that exchange.

Rates for Continuing Clients
Full Reiki Session - $85 (about 90 minutes)

Reiki and Bartering
There are always some items and services that I am open to bartering for. If there is an item or service you have to barter with, please feel free to speak with me about it. As with any bartering exchange, the situation in which I will do that is by us coming up with something that is mutually beneficial and satisfying to both parties. I will maintain a list of items and services that I know I am interested in bartering for - if you can provide one of those, just let me know!

Client Referrals
I have built some great relationships with clients who were introduced to me by other clients, and I enjoy showing my appreciation not only for your choosing to honor yourself by receiving this service in the first place, but by wanting to share it with those who are among your friends and acquaintances.

When a client whom you referred comes and sees me, I will offer you a free Reiki session in return. The client whom you referred will be able to take a $20 discount on their second session (as their first session donation will already be decided by them).

This is the way I have come up with to thank you for helping me to do this work that I feel so moved to do.

Home

Welcome to Dances With Hoops Healing Arts!

7. If you have a workplace or some kind of event where you would like a presentation of Reiki to occur, just contact me and we can talk about setting something up.

Most often, a Reiki presentation entails a short talk, a demonstration, and time for questions and answers.

4. A Reiki Session

I welcome you into my treatment space, a calm, peaceful atmosphere where your session starts by simply walking through the door. I greet you and invite you to stop for a moment, breathe, and transition into a space of healing and balance.

After any maintenance issues are taken care of, I invite you to lie, fully clothed, on a massage table. I lay my hands on your belly so that you can get acclimated to my touch and we take a few minutes to communicate with each other. Are there any special needs that you have? Is the room warm enough? Is the music to your liking or would you rather receive in silence? Do you enjoy the scent of incense or burning sage? Is there anything else you want me to know or any questions you have? I tell you that when I am done I will leave the room and get us both some water to drink, and that you can remain lying down until I come back and then to get up slowly, when you are ready.

I then lay my hands on you in a series of positions, from the head down to the feet. I do this first while you are lying on your back, and then I have you turn over. The hand positions and the series of movements may change from time to time, but will largely follow a similar pattern.

When I come back with water and you have risen to a seated position on the table, I will give you the space to describe what the session was like for you. I do this for two reasons: one, it helps to reinforce and integrate whatever happened during the session for you, and two, it helps to bridge the transition from our session back to the outside world.

3. You can't be too young or too old, too ill or too well. Whomever you are and whatever your current state, Reiki will gently move you towards a greater balance. It combines well with other wellness techniques and can never do anything but good.

2. You may feel a lessening of chronic pain, you may feel warm, energized, or like you meditated for an hour and now have a greater clarity of thought. Very often people just say that they feel better in general, and better about themselves. A simple but profound feeling.

Contact Dances With Hoops

David

danceswithhoops@gmail.com

206.795.0494

6. It is not a replacement for other kinds of treatment. Your experience of it may not be similar to someone else's experience. It is not complicated. It is not difficult to practice.

It will be for you to decide what place Reiki has in your life.

5. How much Reiki?

As we are all unique individuals, and we each have our own path towards balance, our individual response to Reiki will vary. Historically, Reiki treatments have sometimes been offered four days in a row initially - a kick-off to the healing process. This is not always feasible. I usually recommend a few sessions spaced close together, and then to broaden them out as time passes. If you learn to practice Reiki yourself, then you can start replacing or augmenting treatments with your own self-treatment.

For people with serious needs, a Reiki intensive can sometimes be a good way to go. This involves getting treatment every day for an extended amount of time (two or three weeks commonly), or getting treatment from a group of practitioners for an entire day.

Ultimately, it is you who will know how much Reiki you want to receive. And it is you who will decided to receive treatments or to learn to do Reiki yourself. All Reiki is good, and some is better than none.

Resources

The Reiki Alliance - http://www.reikialliance.com/

Reiki NorthWest - http://www.reikinw.com

1. Reiki is a spiritual practice. It is a surprisingly simple and accessible, though subtle at times, practice that we can use to achieve balance. Through Reiki we can feel balanced in many realms: physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, interpersonally. We can receive this practice through a Reiki Practitioner, and we can easily learn from a Reiki Master how to give this gift to ourselves and those we wish to share it with.
